Tappetino tessuto a mano, cotone e lana, Lesotho (Sudafrica), 2019

Si tratta di un regalo di Carla, una cara amica, che me lo ha portato in dono da un suo viaggio in Africa. Il manufatto è stato realizzato dalle donne di Teyateyaneng, nel cuore della produzione artigianale del Lesotho (Sudafrica), presso il laboratorio tessile di Elleloang Basali. Il nome dato al laboratorio significa SIATE CONSAPEVOLI, DONNE! Sul tappetino delle dimensioni di una mano è rappresenta una casa, anzi una capanna.

Carla scrive nel suo bigliettino “mi piace pensare che appoggiare la fronte su questa piccola mattonella tessuta a mano arrechi grande conforto dalla fatica e dal dolore”. Durante il lockdown da Covid-19 la mattonella tessuta è stata sul mio comodino. Nel guardarla, nel tenerla tra le mani, ho pensato alla casa come riparo, ma anche al villaggio come forma di vita esemplare e possibile.

Handwoven carpet, cotton and wool, Lesotho (South Africa), 2019

It is a gift from Carla, a dear friend, who brought it to me as a gift from her trip to Africa. The artifact was made by the women of Teyateyaneng, in the heart of the handicraft production of Lesotho (South Africa), at the Elleloang Basali textile workshop. The name given to the lab means BE AWARE, WOMEN! On the hand-sized mat is represented a house, or rather a hut.

Carla writes in her note “I like to think that resting your forehead on this small hand-woven tile brings great comfort from fatigue and pain”. During the lockdown from Covid-19 the woven tile was on my bedside table. In looking at it, in holding it in my hands, I thought of the house as a shelter, but also to the village as an exemplary and possible way of life.
